Collagen is the glue holding your body together, scaffolding, if you will, providing structure and strength to your body.
Collagen is essential for connective tissue and holding cells together. It improves skin elasticity and contributes to a healthy, vibrant glow. Collagen is vital for overall health and plays many crucial roles in our bodies, but I’ll discuss that in another post.
But what is it? Collagen is protein molecules made up of amino acids, such as glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, alanine, and hydroxylysine. In fact, Collagen is the most abundant protein found in our bodies, making up a significant portion of our skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues.
Collagen’s triple-helix structure of three polypeptide chains woven together, provides strength and stability to various tissues.
Collagen comes in different types, but the majority is in these three categories: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.
- Type 1 Collagen: The most prevalent, found in skin, bones, tendons, and organs. It provides structural support and helps maintain the firmness and elasticity of skin.
- Type 2 Collagen: Primarily found in cartilage, making it crucial for joint health and flexibility.
- Type 3 Collagen: Often found alongside Type 1 and provides structural support to organs, muscles, and blood vessels.
